Used books have a charm of their own, well at least for me – a regular visitor of flee markets. Any time i visit a new place, i make some time to try and visit their flee markets of that town. Although most of the times, i end up disappointed, sometimes, i do strike gold – like one of my recent visits to “Ukkadam” in Coimbatore. I shall do a dedicated post on this later.

As the famous saying goes, ” A picture is worth a thousand words”, these 5 pictures that i have attached tell a small story of sentiments, humor, betrayal, hope and generosity. It is a unique story that started 40 years ago, probably when this book was published. The book has been published in 1971 – 41 years ago.

The original owner of the book is apprehensive of lending his book to his friend, adds this note before his friend even probably starts reading the book, and warns him of dire consequences, lest this book doesn’t come back to him.

This is the message that his friend was supposed to read. The friend has written something across this message in pencil ( if observed carefully), but which has lost its legibility over the years. I don’t think that even the subsequent reader was able to read it, since he does not pass any comments about them. However, my guess is that something like this was probably written ” Since you have pi*sed me off, i am trashing your prized possession, as*hole”

For a few years since that incident, this book was probably lying in some old book stall, before it was bought by another person. This person has either not read this book, or choose to ignore the comments written by the original owner. He has then given this book to a known person, likely his friend, who has read the comments and wanted to reply. So, he re-directed subsequent owners to his page i.e page below.

He feels sorry for the book not reaching the original owner, and feels that it is unlikely that the original owner would ever get to see his book again, as it was in the safe hands of the current owner.. i.e him.

He then feels guilty and decides to return the book, but doesn’t know how to return it, since the original owner who trusted his friend, didn’t bother to put in his address. The current owner also thinks that the person who gave him the book is not the probable original owner and provides his justification.

Feeling guilty, he decides to return the book, but how? Understanding that if he retains the book, the original owner would never get it back, he decides to sell the book ( what a kind soul ), for a quarter of a rum ( I doubt he would have got so much, had he sold it even back then), and wishes the owner good luck, that he may get the book back.

The book is 40 years old. Even assuming roughly that the original owner was 10 years old at that time, he would be 50 now. If by any chance he or his progeny get to read this post and want the book to be given back , kindly contact me so that it may be returned to him. Considering that I have restored one of his prized possessions, would he call me over and provide me with a sumptuous feast or would be so ungrateful to not even restore the Rs.20 which i paid for this book ? Well, What do you think?

Dedicated : To the girl with the beautiful nose ;)

A shade of darkness,
in perfect contrast to the moon.
She spoke in semi coyness,
as a flower, freshly bloomed.

If black was beauty, then so was her mane.

A pearly laugh and a gentle smile,

a not so uncommon menu ,to drive guys insane.

beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder,
something that is user defined.
a few folks call me crazy to write such things,
something that i hardly do mind.

If all these descriptors made her beauteous,
i dont find her beautiful at all.
There is one thing that i havent spoken about yet,
that will certainly make my previous verses feel quite small.

“A rose is a rose is a rose.”, coined stein.
“A nose is a nose is a nose.” , said me.
“Does this make any sense?”, i do wonder,
so i’ll call this senseless , but rhyming poetry.

As blunt as a used pencil,
and as dark as it too.
the curve at its bottom,
amuses me real true.

She rules my dreams
as she did the world.
you read the first of its kind,
a story of a nose unheard.

The book is a light read about the Nuremberg trials. It goes into minor details of the ambience, the defendants, their crimes and the verdict. The author is a Russian diplomat and this book was written during the cold war and hence obviously involves a lot of bias. The author blames the western world for setting up the Nazi regime against Communist Russia, and tries to put forward his justifications. He justifies this statement using the Munich pact as an example and how Russia was never consulted before taking the decision to grant the Sudetenland to Germany.

He also says that Russia would have come to Czechoslovakia’s aid ( which Marshall Georgy Zhukov also says in his memoirs), though it is quite unlikely that Stalin may have actually consented to a war against Germany in 1938. The Author, however, does not talk one word about the controversial Russo- German pact of 1939 and the crimes committed against Poland, the swallowing of the Baltic States in 1939-40 , the Russo-Finnish war , the Katyn Massacre or the Doctors trial. Then again, we must also admit that at that time , had the author had been unbiased and absolutely honest, this book may never have seen publication. It is a publication typical of the “Cold War” era, with one side blaming the other.

The Battle of Britain was one of the most important events in the course of the second world war. It would go on to be celebrated as one of the momentous moments in a country’s history, as probably is Stalingrad in Russia. It was the stubborn resistance of Britain to not yield to Nazi Germany’s threat and to bravely resist her that earned her politicians, pilots , naval seamen, members of the Royal family and above all ordinary civilians iconic status. This is the primary basis over which any book based on this subject is written.

Over the years a clichéd image of the battle has been formed in mind, and brought down generation after generation. Inevitably almost all books look to justify an image that was built over the years, and continue to build on the same points, again and again. It has now been taken almost for granted that Hitler for sure planned an invasion on Britain ( Sea Lion) and arguments like the Führer’s Directive16, Halder’s diary entries describing the plans and preparations of invasion and the famed arguments between the German Navy and Army have supported this theory. Churchill’s iron will, The Spitfire’s legend , Dowding’s Fighter Arm that bravely resisted the Luftwaffe and the unanimous will of the British people to resist have been written over and over again.

Accordingly, Documents from the war which are based essentially on intelligence ( faulty at times), constant apprehensions ( of invasion) , exaggerated claims made by both the Germans and the British and documents targeted at potential propaganda and interviews and memoirs of war heroes , politicians and administrators later, have grossly solidified the above truths. In following conventional tradition, historians have accordingly sought and provided further arguments to support these established theories.

It is here that we have a book, that looks to break these established facts as mere myths and provide very rationalistic arguments to support them. Rather than going into the details of the war in chronological form in mundane detail, Overy prefers to focus on the main points of discussion (the glorified myths) and assesses statistical data from a very different perspective. The real strength of the book can be appreciated by one who has atleast some basic knowledge of the battle ( including its myths). As you read the book, you get a feeling of being with the author in a real time discussion, and in most cases agree with him. The language of the book is very simple and the author does not exaggerate a point beyond what is actually required.

Early preparations and Assessment of RAF and Luftwaffe Tactics:The Luftwaffe’s primary tactics were of support to the Army. But at the time of the Battle, it still held a substantial force good enough for an air war. Britain’s Air force was not expected to support the army and Navy and was expected to work independently, as it was believed that the Royal Navy was strong enough to support herself.

Britain had largely prepared for the war expecting the air battle to be a strategic one. Britain had used Germany’s compulsory conscription in the early 1930s as an excuse to stop her disarmament program and over the years, her defense budget had increased drastically. Bomber Command was strengthened and was to be used in retaliation against Germany, if need be. The civilians were warned and trained to prepare against Gas and air attacks. A substantial amount of the later budgets were directed towards Radar development and Fighter command.

The dogmas of both the RAF and the Luftwaffe never insisted on Terror bombing tactics. Again, Overy has his views on this concept, which is described later.

Churchill’s stubborness Vs a peace with Nazi Germany: There is no doubt that surely Churchill was a better man than Chamberlain to be leading Britain when the war began. Having suffered losses during the Norwegian campaign when the Luftwaffe and the puny Kreigsmarine humbled the Great Royal Navy and following the rapid collapse of France, it is only logical that Britain would have preferred to negotiate a peace with Hitler. Diplomatic efforts were in full swing during this interim period between Dunkirk and the Battle where Hitler hoped to gain a victory with no bloodshed. Britain could choose now to bow down or resist.

From here on, most books say that unanimously, the people agreed to resist Germany. Overy provides examples of top politicians who were in favour of peace with Germany. Lord Halifax asked the British parliament to consider the possibility of a peace with Germany. (though not at any cost.)He never liked Churchill’s attitude of “fight to the death” and wished that Churchill would think logically, given the state of the situation. The British military historian Basil Lidell Hart ( The military theories of combined arms operations proposed by JFC Fuller and Hart were ignored by the British but studied and along with their own ideas developed an eventual mobile combined arms doctrine under General Heinz Guderian which later came to be known as Blitzkrieg.) was also in favour of peace with Germany. David George, Britain’s head during the first world war was also in favour of a peace with Hitler. Overy also provides examples of other diplomats and politicians in favor of peace. Incidentally, Chamberlain (with failing health) who initially was always for peace (appeasement), supported Churchill with his decision.

Having provided this, Overy goes on to discuss the consequences of a peace with Germany. In the build up to the war, it is known that the west wished Nazi Aggression towards Communist Russia, whilst Stalin preferred the western enemies to fight each other and burn themselves out. ( Overy provides an example later, when Britain requested Russia for airplanes during the battle, which she refused. It also happens at the time of the Nazi-Soviet pact.)
Overy argues the decision in favor of Britain on an economic basis and also based on lack of trust

“Nothing in Hitler’s record could give any serious grounds for the British to expect Hitler to honour any pledges entered into.”

“At the same time, a ‘New Order’ for the European economy was announced , with a previliged Germany at its core. British interests were , under such circumstances, fundamentally incompatible with German hegemony across Europe.”

A SILENT COLUMN AGAINST DEMOCRACY: Information like this might seem drastically trivial, especially in the face, that Britain had declared a state of Emergency during the war. To be fair, such decisions would be realistic in any country, especially with growing anxiety against the enemy’s plans. But it is my belief that with the image of so called “British Democracy”, information that might seem otherwise or more prone to Fascism, has not been much brought to light. Overy gives an example citing the air ministries fears against the 77,000 foreigners who were in Britain , constituted potential spies and did not want them to move into the country side for fear of infiltration. ( This could be comparable to the internment of Japanese in America after the Pearl Harbour attack.) Also a campaign was undertaken to stop gossip and rumour mongers, which failed miserably and resulted in public hostility.

BRITAIN – ALONE? : ” This is probably the most enduring myth, sustained in simple disregard of the vital and substantial support of Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand , India and the colonial empire.”

SEA LION: An established fact has been well debated in this book. The idea of Sea lion is said to have been put forward by Admiral Erich Raeder, the head of the German Kriegsmarine ( Navy) . Documents Like Fuhrer Directive 16 support the theory that Hitler did intend to invade Sea lion. Overy throws many arguments that provide a balanced view of both for and against the invasion. He concludes that it was not a question of desirability, but of actual feasibility.

I wish to bring my two points in addition to Overy’s conclusions.

a) Chestor Wilmot – The Struggle for Europe: ” While the Kreigsmarine might raise sufficient shipping to lift the first wave of 90,000 men and 650 tanks, as the Army plan required, it could not provide sufficient shipping for the second wave of 170,000 men, 34,000 vehicles and 57,000 horses which they would need.” From this statement, it looks likely that only the armoured divisions of Germany would be ferried across. Most of the infantry and horses that carry the heavy equipment would not be transported across. It is unlikely that the German army would change its tactics and would likely use the Blitzkreig tactics again and without the infantry to mop up the captured ground , the decision could prove likely suicidal.

b) The Norwegain campaign took place between 9 April and 10th June, 1940. Though the campaign was succesfully won by the Germans, it came at a heavy cost to the Kreigsmarine – 3 cruisers, 10 destroyers, 4 U boats and German battleships – Gneisenau and Scharnhorst were put out of action for several months. This left the Navy in a very bad state. Operation Sea lion under Fuhrer directive 16 was announced on July 16, 1940. Didnt the Fuhrer realize the current state of his Navy when he was preparing for an amphibious operation?

Overy also provides the dimension that even if the Germans had achieved their 2 primary objectives of defeating the RAF and the Royal Navy, they would still have not knocked out the British Army, which would also have to be considered, as such an amphibious operation had never been attempted in German history before. An invasion was possible only if Germany was assured of a victory, else it would end in a catastrophe.

c) The Racial viewpoint: This factor is seldom ignored, though it formed the very basis for the second world war. Infact Hermann Goering called the war, as the great racial war. Though, Overy does not provide a direct view point on racism, he provides a fact of Hitler’s appreciation for the British.( He never expected them to collapse in six months as he viewed the rotten structure of the Russians, which would come crashing down). In all likely hood, this appreciation comes from the fact that the Germans looked upon the British, as their own people, descendants of the great Nordic Race. [ This view of Hitler would subsequently change as the war went on.] ( Though British Propaganda saw the Germans as barbaric Huns.).

Hitler and Göring even offered peace and joint support for the British Empire, and promised help in the case of a crisis. ( unlike some post war Indian myths that claim that Hitler supported Indian independence from the British. This is likely based on the small Azad Hind Army that fought under General.Erwin Rommel for the Axis). This is confirmed in Diplomat Neville Henderson’s memoirs in Berlin.

SPITFIRE VS BF109: The Spitfire has become the most coveted fighter in British History. It was even used to give a guard of honour at the royal wedding, recently. It has almost been unanimously accepted that this was the plane that saved Britain from the Luftwaffe, at the expense of the real warhorse – the sturdy Hawker Hurricane. During the battle of Britain, Adolf Galland, Chief of the Luftwaffe Fighter arm requesting Göring for a squandron of spitfires, have become legendary. This statement is used as justification in some books to say that the Spitfire was superior to the Bf109.

But realistically speaking, in a scenario like the Battle of Britain, Germany’s possession of a Spitfire ( assuming the Spitfire was better) even could not have made much of a difference to her results. The conditions greatly favoured the defender, and the German’s greatest strength until that point, was surprise, which was not present in the “Battle of Britain” , as the British knew- the coming of German bombers with the help of radar and the observer corps. The total time of flying was almost twice that of the fighting as far as the German monoplane fighter was concerned, which was just opposite to what the British had. ( Overy also provides information of the Germans trying to use drop tanks in 1940 to increase the range of the BF109, which was a failure. I am reading this information for the first time.)

Overy again assesses both these fighters and concluded that both were of the very best at their times, were constantly upgraded and used throughout all theatres of war for both sides, though he feels that the Bf109 may have been just slightly ahead of the Spitfire in 1940. He also justifies the disadvantage of the Bf109 which later had to fly in close contact to protect the bombers and the failed cumbersome twin engined Bf110 fighter.

TERROR BOMBING: The documents of both sides show that the German and the Royal air force never had an agenda of terror bombing as such. Infact, both insisted on trying to avoid civilian casualties as much as possible. But he provides a realistic assessment that in 1940, the technology was not so much developed as to have accurate bombing and avoid civilian casualties. Probably, the most accurate the Germans could have got was with the dive-bombing Ju87 Stuka. The British had none. Faced with a constant threat of lower speeds and being shot out by the faster British fighters , barrage balloons and mounting losses, the Stuka was subsequently removed from the Battle.

SO MANY AGAINST SO FEW: Yet again, this is a myth. Most of the statistics point out to the number of German aircraft against the RAF and assess it from that perspective. What Overy does is more realistic. Even the German side before the war would have known that their bombers would not have stood a chance against the RAF fighters. (The failure of the BF110 would have been a shock). The losses of the Bombers would have been inconsequential, had they been able to lure the RAF fighters and set them up against their own, so that Fighter command could be destroyed. A battle of attrition was what the Luftwaffe had hoped for.

So, the real contest of the battle was the German single engined fighters against the RAF fighters. Statistically, this shows that there was not much of a difference, with whatever advantages available, were in favour of the RAF. The RAF had more fighter pilots , more single engined fighter planes and a better servicability rate. Also, the production capacity of the RAF was better than the Luftwaffe. It clearly was not ” so much against so few.”
FAULTY INTELLIGENCE: The intelligence was faulty on both sides. The Germans underestimated Fighter command’s strength and her manufacturing potential, which led them to believe that they would be faced with fewer pilots than the RAF could actually field. Overy also puts this argument to justify the diversion of pounding of airfields to the London Blitz and not to the famed statement of Hitler that “he would wipe London off the world map, in retaliation to the bombing of Berlin”.

On the other side, The British too got their intelligence wrong (which was heavily exaggerated in a recent book which i read). They grossly over estimated the enemy’s strength and were always in fear of an invasion. But fortunately for them, the RAF pilots could not enjoy the slight complacency that the Luftwaffe pilots enjoyed and it eventually worked in their favour.

It is a book that does not have too many excesses and most sentences can be co-related and further conclusions of your own can be drawn.
For instance, Overy talks about Archibald Sinclair, Britain’s air minister, who had no knowledge of air power, yet was a staunch defender of his men. In contrast, we can make a comparison with his Luftwaffe counterpart – Hermann Goering, who not only blamed his fighter pilots when the Reich was later bombed, but also refused to defend them.

Another example that comes to mind is the discussion that Churchill has with the Air ministry. With the apprehension that Germany would likely use poison gas, Churchill was more keen on retaliation against the Germans, rather than thinking of how to actually defend Britain’s people from it. I could compare this with the Fuhrer’s attitude of retaliating and bombing Britain after 1943. ( V1 Rocket and V2 Cruise Missiles to bomb Britain, rather than prioritizing the Me262 Jet fighter for defending German skies) It looked to me like both Churchill and Hitler had similar attitudes in this context.

The book is very simple and crisp to the point, as Niall Ferguson writes -” Marvellously readable, The Battle of Britain is a direct hit.”

Rajavin Pinnani: http://ilayarajarerecordings.blogspot.com

Flashback I circa 2000 : This incident, although very trivial at that time, some how managed to remain etched in my memory. At that time Mahendra, Mani and myself were staying in MAK Jeyakumar Sir’s house in KK Nagar. One day, i heard Physics Sir Saravanan conversing with JK – “Rerecording naa .. Ilayaraja dhaan”..

Flashback II circa 2007: Bs entry into our room changed a lot of things. Although I have reserved views about a few of my room mates today , my first impression about him was really very good. One feature that i liked in him was his ability to explore things, softwares included. It was he who taught Ks who taught me eventually how to use some free softwares to edit songs and videos.

Flashback III Sep2007: A few days before my sister Deepthi’s wedding, i decided to start this blog, by uploading MP3s. We did not have broadband connections then, and i had to use a browsing center, and could only afford to load MP3 versions of the BGMs. ( Most of the MP3 connections hosted on external servers are now dead, sadly. I have to update them.) After i moved to Bangalore in 2008, I had my own Broadband connection and started uploading video clips in Google Servers. The responses to the blog since then have been amazing.

This blog has always been closest to my heart, and will always be. While I have decided to merge all my other blogs into a single one, this i have decided to retain, as it is. I have also managed to sustain a relatively large amount of interest in this blog, while my others have slowly waned down. I have always perceived this blog as solely the identity of Ilayaraja (obviously) and my role is simply as a vehicle to transport some of his soul-stirring works to his fans.

How it happened: It will be not an exaggeration if i said that Ilayaraja has got me through tough times, when you are down and out, in sorrow, happiness or simply helpless during those terrible periods of work pressure – when you simply feel that you’re almost banging your head against a brick wall, his music can do wonders. Even today, there would be many who feel that no one could compose a lullaby like him. At that time, although his songs were available, there was a dearth of his BGM’s and more over his BGM’s were stereotyped into the classic Nayagan, Mouna Raagam and Punnagai Mannan. Not many people knew beyond that. I tried to fulfill that void, in my small own way.

In his own words as to why is BGM is special – ” I don’t try to do anything special. My music is simply a highlighting tool. It is derived from what is essentially the content in the movie and not otherwise. The music should not be a dominant factor or competitive factor in the scene but merely a complimentary factor. Pinnani Isai arivai saarndha vishayam aaga iruka koodathu, aanal unarvu saarndha vishayam aaga iruka vendum.“

This blog was always intended to put things from a layman’s experience. Even though, i don’t understand the technical things of the music, i simply post it because i like it and it makes me happy, and more importantly, the others who come and view and listen to the music. Raja himself had used a similar analogy in a TV show when he said that ” One can appreciate good food, without knowing how to cook.” A few years later, i met Raj online. Raj is a very knowledgeable, disciplined and organized person and soon became a co-author of the blog, although in essence he is the real author, while i merely do the editing , cutting and posting job. Although I was active in an Orkut Community owned by Raj, for some reasons, i have not been able to follow up there.

Since i started this blog, i have watched movies only to hear his BGM. This quest has led me to find and appreciate some very rare and awesome movieslike BaluMahendra’s “Veedu” and Mahendran’s “Pootatha Pootukkal” which are classics in their own right (and some painfully horrible movies also , which have had to be rescued by his BGM) . An important aspect of BGM score is identifying a recurring pattern in the screenplay of the movie as he views it and accordingly composing a unique theme (leit motif) for the subsequent scenes that are related to , or follow that unique pattern.

If i look back at all these years when i have surfed the net and had to pick one thing that gave me soul-satisfaction, i would have picked this. Raja rocks..

Flashback I – circa 2002: Years ago , during our second year in college , Vinoth , Hari and I lived together in Ponneri in appalling conditions and almost abjunct poverty ( This view is in hindsight :( ) . Our bitter struggles and tiff’s for water with the house owner and his fat daughter-in-law were well known in the neighbourhood locality. I was a die-hard Captain fan at that time. . None the less, one day, Vinoth came and told me a story titled – “The Reflector”. The screenplay of the story was a satirical take on Captain’s earlier movies woven together and how Captain saved the Earth from the Sun. After completing the story , he just gave me a one-liner, and said that was what “Reflector Part II” was supposed to be based on.

Flashback II – circa 2006-07: Faster access to the net was now available and we were all bitten by the “Orkut” bug. I was a member of ”Captain – The Savior of India” community. I posted the story that Vinoth had told me – “The Reflector” and it received a pretty decent response. That was it. From then, a tsunami of creativity (Mokkai) was unleashed within me. I wrote the sequel for the Reflector and also many new stories, subsequently. The ideas , screenplay and dialogue are all my own ideas. The stories were satirical forms of Captain with the essential dry wit (Mokkai), based on day to day political events of that period . I am posting them with the links for you. As always, i fore-warn you – “Read them at your own risk.”

The stories have all been written in satirical form and do not intend to hurt anybody, personally. These story reading experiences can be even more painful than being at the receiving end of a BDSM movie, watching an early Simbhu film, receiving a slap from Harbhajan Singh or even trying to contemplate what Sharad Pawar is exactly saying. None the less, if you have decided to take a plunge, i suggest you to test the waters by reading a small story and decide for yourself. – “Dumeel Dumeel Diwali” . Viewing any of these stories will require a Google/Orkut account.

STRICT WARNING: These stories contain a heavy dosage of Mokkai masala. If you are not used to such strong doses of Mokkai, it is advisable that you do not proceed further.

Following are a list of the stories written by me. You can find them in text format in “Captain – The Savior of India” community in Orkut and I have added some Testimonies from some brave people who have managed to endure the painful journey through each of these stories :
